Martha was born in Greenville District, SC on 18 Apr 1786 to Lewis Wells and Elizabeth Bates. Lewis was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. On 21 Oct 1802 she married William Williams. Around 1805 several families from the Greenville District (Pyles, McElvains, Wells, Williams, & Taylors) headed out to farm in Illinois (Perry County). The Indians proved to be too hostile and the families moved to Christian County, KY to farm. The families were familiar with this area as they hunted here often. Around 1817 Martha's family moved to Perry County as did several of the other families. The Williams boys moved to Perry County in the Fall of 1827. In the early 1830's Martha and her two daughters, Mary & Ann moved to Perry County. It is not known if William and Martha separated or divorced but Martha never returned to live in Christian County. Martha died on 11 Oct 1876 in her home in Perry County,IL. She is buried in McElvain Cemetery.
