    Lewis is the son of Thomas Wells and Susannah Cole. He was born on 22 Jun 1750 in Lunenburg County, VA. When Lewis was three, his grandfather, John Cole, deeded him land in Lunenburg County, VA. His father died when Lewis was young and his mother remarried William Gamblin. The Gamblins moved to Chatham County, NC. Lewis later lived in Union County, SC where he married Elizabeth. Lewis fought in the Revolutionary War. He was in Colonel Brandon's regiment. They were on the front line in the Battle of Cowpens. Around 1803 the family, along with the Pyle family and McElvain family decided to move to Illinois. They found the Indians to be too hostile and then moved to Christian County, KY. Around 1812, they sold their land in Christian County and moved to Perry County, IL. Lewis died in Perry County on 12 Aug 1846 and is buried in McElvain Cemetery outside the city of St. Johns, IL. The cemetery is near the land that they farmed.
