    James war born in Barren County, Kentucky on 15 Apr 1832 to John B. Stone and Susan Bailey. The family moved to Miller County in the early 1840's and settle in land north of the town of Iberia.  James married Priscilla West in Miller County on 14 Jun 1853. Priscilla was the daughter of John Warren West and Sally Smith. James and family were in Miller County at the time of the Civil War. James enlisted in Company A of the 9th Missouri Sharpshooters. He had two brothers in the Union Army. James was mortally wounded in the Battle of Helena on 4 Jul 1863. He died at Polks Plantation which was about 10 miles west of Helena. His burial sight has not been confirmed. The link above goes to John A Stone of Pindell's Battalion (his unit). The records show no person with the last name of Stone other than James. After James's death the family remained in Miller County for a few years. They were harassed due to him being a Confederate soldier. Eventually the family moved to Moniteau County.
