James was born in Montgomery County, Va to Benjamin Corder and Rebecca Runyon on 19 Dec 1804. In his teens, the family moved to the Floyd County Kentucky area. Here he met and married Juda Murray on 9 Feb 1826. They had two girls, Mary & Elizabeth. Juda died around 1831. On 26 Aug 1832 he married Leagh Jane Hylton in Floyd County, KY. Shortly after his marriage James, Juda, and his parents moved to Benton County, MO. They farmed about a mile south of the town of Warsaw. In the late 1840's he purchased 40 acres in the Northeast corner of Callaway county. He farmed there until his death on 4 Feb 1883. He and his wife are buried in Mannen Cemetery. The cemetery is located in the middle of a cow pasture about a mile due south of his property. The cemetery has been overrun and the gravesites can no longer be seen.
