Census: 1830

John was born in VA and as a young boy the family moved to Mercer County, Ky. In 1803 the family moved to a farm near Corydon, IN. He was a carpenter by trade and helped build the courthouse in Corydon. In 1810 he married Jane Long, daughter of  James Long and Priscilla Lasswell. In 1818 they moved to Bond County, IL. His brother, James also moved to Bond County and lived near him. John had an orchard on his land. The land was Southwest of Greenville. John and his brother, James donated land to form the Smith Grove Cemetery and the Smith Grove Baptist Church. Both brothers were active in the church and both are buried in the cemetery.
