James was born on 24 Dec 1767 in Louduon County Virgina to Edward Long and Jane Jones. He fought in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia militia. He married Priscilla Lasswell in Franklin County VA in 1790. Around 1794 they moved to Washington County, KY. In the Fall of 1817 the family moved to Bond County, IL. James was a farmer and a Baptist preacher. He was also a nurseryman and raised apples. He was known as "apple John". He helped organize the Smith Grove Baptist church. His two son-in-laws gave land to form the church and the adjacent cemetery. He died intestate (probate records are above). He is buried in Smith Grove. In 1927 the local DAR chapter placed a marker on his unmarked grave.
